Sites Guide How To

This guide is designed to help pilots fly UHPC sites safely and confidently. It’s tailored for newly qualified Club Pilots transitioning from training, for visiting pilots, and to ensure that experienced UHPC pilots stay current with specific site procedures and are informed about flying at unfamiliar locations.

Important Notice:
Hang gliding and paragliding are adventure sports that involve inherent risks, including the potential for serious injury. While we’ve made every effort to ensure this guide’s accuracy, it is intended solely for reference. This is not a comprehensive “do-it-yourself” manual; rather, it offers a basic overview of each site. Pilots should always check with the club’s Sites Officer for any updates. After reviewing this guide, each pilot should independently assess the site and weather conditions and determine that it is safe to fly.

How to Use This Guide:

  • Sites Listing: Sites are organized alphabetically. Click on a site in the index to navigate directly to its information page.
  • Site Rules: Be sure to first read and adhere to the general Site Rules.
  • Guide Page Overview: Each site’s guide page contains specific sections for ease of use:
  • Location: Displays the Irish Grid reference for the site.
  • Wind Directions: Wind directions are listed in degrees from Grid North (not Magnetic North, as used in Air Traffic Control reports). The variation was approximately 10 degrees west in 1989.
  • Suitability Type: Lists the types of gliders suitable for each site, as our club supports only hang gliders and paragliders.
  • Pilot Rating: Based on the BHPA pilot rating system, this rating indicates the experience level needed to fly safely at each site or as required by land permissions. Sites near regulated airspace display relevant BHPA Pilot ratings.
