White Park Bay

White Park Bay is a small coastal cliff site on Northern Ireland’s north coast, with a launch at 200ft above sea level. The site is known for smooth ridge soaring, particularly when conditions at other sites are too windy. The usual soaring range is between Portbradden and Ballintoy, and this site has previously set notable UHPC cross-country records.

Site Rules and Hazards

  • Experienced Assistance: It is advised that an experienced helper assists with launches for both paragliders and hang gliders. Pilots new to the site should consult with an experienced club pilot.
  • Hazards:
  • Launch Turbulence: Turbulent air and rotor effects can be present at launch, especially in stronger winds. Hang gliders may lift off prematurely from the rear. Use an experienced helper to ensure wings remain level.

Launch and Landing Zones

  • Launch: Launch with the assistance of an experienced helper to keep wings level. After takeoff, make a gentle right turn along the ridge.
  • Bottom Landing Zone:
  • Bottom landing is possible just below the launch in a grassy area behind the sand dunes or on the beach itself. If landing on the beach, stay well back from the sea, aiming for the rear of the beach.
  • Turbulence Caution: Be cautious of turbulence and the sharp drop caused by the dunes.
  • Top Landing Zone:
  • Top landings require adequate height to clear turbulence generated by the cliff. Under typical conditions, 300ft is adequate, but stronger winds may require additional height.
  • Landing Approach: Turn downwind about 3/4 mile out and approach with extra speed to manage any turbulence or sink. Avoid overshooting to prevent encountering rotor effects. When in doubt, bottom land instead.

Air Traffic Control Restrictions

  • None: There are no air traffic control restrictions for White Park Bay.
