A low, shallow, broken ridge approximately 3/4 miles long, located adjacent to the main Mayobridge site. It can provide reasonable ridge soaring and thermal flying conditions.
Location: Irish Grid ref J190264
Wind Directions: North-west to north-north-east, 340 – 020 degrees
Suitability: Paragliding and Hang Gliding
Pilot Rating: BHPA Club Pilots. This site is also used by students.
Road Access
From Hilltown, take the Newry (Mayobridge) Road. After 1.5 miles, where the main road veers right, branch left. Take the first left onto New Road. At the T-junction, turn right and continue to the car park at the top of the hill.
Parking
Park in the lay-by at the hillside. Do not obstruct the road.
Site Access
Directly opposite the car park, offering easy access with no carry-up required.
Hazards
If the wind is coming from the west, it can be quite turbulent. Be aware that the wind can initially be on the hill, then shift to the west, making the ridge in the lee of the north-west Mayobridge ridge. This can create gusty thermal-like conditions along the north face.
Launch
A smooth grassy slope with no significant issues.
Bottom Landing Zone
There are large fields directly below the take-off. Avoid landing in fields with cattle, and during lambing season (March/April), avoid fields with sheep. Before bringing cars up the lane to the bottom landing field, please stop by Terence Fitzpatrick’s house (the first house on the right on the road to the bottom landing). He says, “If I am not in, go ahead,” but please do call!
Top Landing Zone
No problems.
Air Traffic Control Restrictions
There are no immediate air traffic control restrictions to the site. However, there are restrictions at the end of Carlingford Lough for pilots on XC flights.
