Coolnasillagh is a shallow ridge site spanning approximately 2 miles on the southeastern edge of the Sperrin Mountains. - Location: Irish Grid Reference C778009
- Wind Directions: South-east, 120° – 150° (best at 135°)
- Suitability: Hang gliding and paragliding
- Pilot Rating: BHPA Club Pilot
Access Information:
- Road Access: From the top of Glenshane Pass, turn near the lay-by, then take a left followed by another left. Continue for half a mile, then turn right onto a rough lane that runs along the back of the hill. Drive another half mile to a wire gate, which should be opened, secured, and then closed once you pass through. Due to limited parking, use as few cars as possible.
- Parking: Park on the side of the lane, taking care not to obstruct it.
- Site Access: Walk along the track on foot to reach the launch on the opposite side of the hill.
Special Site Rules:
- Lane Access: Do not obstruct the private lane at any time, particularly during the summer, when tractors frequently use it for turf collection.
Hazards:
- Bottom Landing Field: The bottom landing area has a down slope that makes landing problematic for hang gliders. Experienced hang glider pilots may consider up-slope downwind landings in light winds.
Landing Areas:
- Launch: The launch area is a shallow, rounded slope that should not present any problems.
- Bottom Landing Zone: Situated half a mile in front of the launch (Grid Reference C784000). The sloping terrain poses problems for hang glider landings, though it is manageable for paragliders.
- Top Landing Zone: Approach with extra speed to counter potential turbulence. Avoid undershooting, as the back side of the hill slopes downward, leading to a steep descent in sinking air, which could cause a hard landing.
Air Traffic Control Restrictions:
- There are no air traffic control restrictions for this site.
